Poorly lit, written, directed, acted, sound-mixed, edited and anything else you can think of cheap five fingers shoes , Matthew Chapman’s The Ledge, starring Liv Tyler, Charlie Hunnam, Patrick Wilson and Terrence Howard, is the kind of baffling mistake that ends careers. The whole thing’s shot and lit in a particular way, by Bobby Bukowski, that recalls the soft-core porn that plays on cable at around 3 in the morning. But then those films don’t themselves seriously. This one does, to a stubborn extent.
Concerning an atheist hotel manager named Gavin (Hunnam) standing on the ledge of a building, the distraught cop trying to get him off (Howard) and the couple (Tyler and Wilson) that put him there, The Ledge is ultimately about nothing at all. Wilson’s Joe is a staunch Born-Again who’s convinced all homosexuals are going to hell. His wife Shauna doesn’t seem as convinced, though she goes along with it. Gavin and his GAY roommate live across the hall. See, because he’s gay and Joe doesn’t like gay people.
Joe and Gavin viciously debate religion and philosophy while Gavin smugly romances Shauna on the side. He tells all of this to Howard, who can’t be bothered because he just found out he’s sterile and his children are not his. Not that this subplot is explored at all. But it is there, so there’s that. Not that we believe either of these actors are on any kind of ledge anyway, as there’s barely any wind and the ADR only sometimes matches the lips its meant to.
Hunnam’s good at playing bad (Green Street Hooligans, Sons of Anarchy), but unwatchable here, trying to sound deep. It all falls apart completely during a scene in which Gavin and Shauna look up at the stars and Gavin preaches about the endless universe and blah and blah and blah.

Chapman’s a talented writer, producing a sharp, exciting adaptation of John Grisham’s Runaway Jury only a few years back. What happened here is inexplicable. Too many yes men around him? The addition of TRESPASS to the Toronto International Film Festival lineup, as a Gala presentation no less, seemed an unusual move for the prestigious fest, with the film already slated to make it’s DVD/Blu-ray debut on November 1st, making this essentially DTV fare. Sure enough, DVD is exactly where TRESPASS belongs, as it’s a truly routine, B-grade thriller, that offers nothing you haven’t seen done better in films like PANIC ROOM.
Famously, Nicolas Cage walked off the set of this film last year- and having seen the finished product, I can see why, as it pales even alongside some of his recent, less inspiring work. If he’s going to make the comeback many of us are pulling for, TRESPASS is exactly the type of disposable fare he needs to skip.
It’s doubly tragic that TRESPASS co-stars the once great Nicole Kidman, who last came to TIFF with the excellent RABBIT HOLE. What a difference a year makes, but I wonder if the filmmakers involved might have thought TRESPASS could have ended up as more than DVD fare. It’s directed by Joel Schumacher. Make fun of him all you like for his bad BATMAN films, he’s also directed some great ones, like THE LOST BOYS, FALLING DOWN, and TIGERLAND. Heck, I’m one of the two people who even liked THE NUMBER 23, but this seems to be Schumacher just phoning it in.
Put Cage, Kidman, and Schumacher together in a vehicle that’s clearly below them, and you have a film that’s about as much fun to watch as your average TV thriller. In the eighty-five minute run-time, virtually nothing happens that you won’t see coming a mile away. Gee, think ignored housewife Kidman might have a past relationship with hunky criminal Cam Gigandet? Hmmm, is Cage’s daughter going to return home early from her party? Hey, why is the female robber constantly stripping down to her lingerie? Oh wait, isn’t she an ex-stripper? Oh OK, nevermind.
In an echo of the lunatic performances at which he once excelled, Nicolas Cage plays Kyle, a wheeling-dealing diamond broker struggling to pay for his family’s exorbitant lifestyle. So preoccupied he barely notices pleas for intimacy from wife Sarah (Nicole Kidman), he’s seconds away from hearing a portentous “we need to talk” when thieves con their way into his home. It’s possible that new movie “Take Me Home Tonight” might actually have a good story buried somewhere beneath the bad acting, lousy writing, terrible slapstick, and jokes that fly like lead balloons, but director Michael Dowse never gives it a chance to emerge.
In the entire first act, and well into the second, over the top comedy is rammed at the audience until none of it even registers anymore. This upcoming movie’s audience doesn’t even seem to notice when a relationship between a guy and a girl he liked in high school starts to bud.
Young audiences may be lured into the theater by the movie trailer that puts its emphasis on heavy partying, but for the most part, “Take Me Home Tonight” is a DVD in the making.
Gordon Kaywin, and the new movie’s star, Topher Grace, are the executive producers and real life best friends since they were 15. Their intention was to write a comedy based on life as best friends well beyond high school and college. Jackie and Jeff Filgo wrote the script, just like Kaywin and Grace asked them to. Unfortunately, the most noticeable thing about this script is that the friendship doesn’t make any sense.
It would be possible for the relationship between two guys to work, despite the fact that one of them, in the movie picture, is an engineer with a degree from MIT and the other is a jobless ex-car salesman, because they might have something else in common. However, the movie is based on the fact that the two men have a strong bond and have nothing whatsoever in common.
Grace’s Matt Franklin is the son of a cop and yet goes with a friend to steal a car, drives while drunk and under lots of other “influences, is instrumental in starting fights at parties, and then ends up crashing the car he stole because he’s trying out the coke he finds in the glove box.
The movie’s silly central set up is that Matt, a nice looking, smart guy, can’t get a date with a former high school beauty named Tori, played by Teresa Palmer. And the fact that his twin sister, played by Ann Faris, is going to marry a stupid partier played by Chris Pratt, is equally goofy.
None of this makes sense. Matt and Tori only hook up when she decides she’s as lost as he is. At that point Barry finds the love of his life, Kitchelle, played by Michelle Trachtenberg. And this is right after a weird encounter with a strange, female sexual predator played by Angie Everhart.
Nobody is going to give these relationships more than a day, and neither are they going to give “Take Me Home Tonight” more than 24 hours on the big screen.
